Scholarships and Fellowships for Korean Studies Scholars

For international students studying abroad is an exciting opportunity to interact with and learn new cultures and people as well as a nightmare considering the humongous expenses they have to bear for such experiences. Fellowships and Scholarships provides a relief from this tension. The South Korean government are providing many scholarships and fellowships for international students ranging from short term scholarships to long term ones. Explore below the various financial and academic incentives provided by the government as well as private institutions.

Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) Program             

Available for Bachelors and Masters students. Scholarship benefits include flight, tuition, stipend, medical insurance, settlement allowance and completion grants

Scholarship Coverage

Global Korea Scholarship provides the recipient with the following benefits:

  • Airfare (Return Air Ticket)

  • Settlement Allowance: 200,000 KRW (offered once after entry to Korea)

  • Monthly Allowance: (Degree Program) 900,000 KRW per month, (Research Program) 1,500,000 KRW per month

  • Research Allowance

    • Liberal Arts and Social Science majors: 210,000 KRW per semester

    • Natural Science and Engineering majors: 240,000 KRW per semester

  • 1-Year Korean Language Training Fee: Fully covered

  • Degree Program Tuition: Fully covered

  • Paper printing fee: 500,000 ~ 800,000 KRW

  • Medical Insurance will be covered.

  • Korean Proficiency Grants: 100,000 KRW per month

Seoul National University Scholarship 

Seoul National University offers scholarships for international students to pursue Masters and Ph.D. courses.

Eligibility- The applicants should not hold Korean citizenship. The candidates must have excellent academic and school record. The applicants must have secured 80% or more marks (out of 100%) in the last attended educational institution.

 

  • Scholarship Coverage- Tuition fee exempted for a maximum of 8 semesters. Stipend for 2 years. Medical Insurance.

AKS Fellowship

  • Eligibility- Researchers from overseas universities who major in Korean Studies (Korean applicants must hold permanent residency of the relevant country). Applicants must be a candidate for or holder of doctorate degree.

  • Scholarship Coverage- Airfare: 1 economy roundtrip ticket. Monthly Stipend-2,000,000 won. Supporting Period: up to 1 year. Available Facilities: Laboratories, libraries, and many more. Guesthouse on the AKS premises (charged).

KAIST Scholarship

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology provides scholarship to international students to pursue Masters and Ph.D. in Science and Technology.

 

  • Eligibility- The applicants must not hold Korean citizenship. The candidates must have excellent academic and school record. The students must have a high school diploma or degree from their home country’s institutes.

  • Scholarship Coverage- Tuition fee exempted for a maximum of 8 semesters for PhD and 4 semesters for Masters. Monthly living allowances of KRW 350,000. Medical Insurance (free National Health Insurance).

Scholarship for Graduate Studies

The KF Scholarship for Graduate Studies (GS) is designed to provide scholarship support to graduate students majoring in a Korea-related field or focusing on a Korea-related research topic at a university located outside Korea.

  • Eligibility -MA students or Ph.D. candidates in the humanities, social sciences, arts & cultural studies, or any other relevant field with a Korea-related research topic- For 1 year

  • Scholarship Coverage-Tuition (The amount of tuition aid varies depending on the tuition fees and cost of living by region and country.)

Fellowship for Korean Language Training

  • Eligibility- Students and Ph.D. candidates who are majoring in Korean studies (in the humanities, social sciences, or arts & culture) and are currently involved in Korea-related research. All those who apply must be able to understand and speak at least basic Korean.

  • Scholarship Coverage- Tuition and other fees relevant to the educational institution, stipend to partially cover living expenses, travel allowance, health insurance- For 6 months

Fellowship for Field Research

  • Eligibility- Scholars from outside of Korea who are 1) conducting comparative or case studies in the field of Korean studies or in Korea-related areas in the humanities or social sciences, or 2) focusing on research topics that are closely related to Korea and recognized as important new areas of study

  • Scholarship Coverage- Travel insurance, support for entry expenses, round-trip airfare- For 1-6 months.

POSCO TJ PARK Foundation Fellowship

  • Eligibility- Citizens of an Asian country who are seeking to enroll in a master's degree/PhD awarding program for the upcoming academic year. All areas of study (MBA excluded)

  • Scholarship Coverage- Master's Program: Full tuition for 4 semesters and living expenses for 22 months (1 million won/month). Doctoral Program/Integrated Master's and Doctoral Program: Full tuition for 6 semesters and living expenses for 36 months (1 million won/month). Initial settlement fee of 1 million won (one time), National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), etc. Support for Korean language education, certificate award ceremony, farewell, and Korean cultural experience

Daewoong Global Scholarship Program

  • Eligibility- Ability to explain one's career goals or give a personal introduction in a logical/detailed manner (Korean or English, whichever the candidate prefers).  Desire to seek employment or settle in South Korea. Sufficient understanding of Korean culture that could ease the transition to Korean corporate culture or personal disposition that suits Korean culture.
     

  • Scholarship Coverage- Scholarship aid of 500,000 won per month, internship opportunities, job-seeking class, personal skill enhancement training, job opportunities, etc.

Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP)

  • Ewha Global Partnership Program (EGPP) is a global initiative that s and educates promising females from developing countries on full scholarship for undergraduate or graduate level, with the aim to nurture them as leading professionals and global leaders of the 21st century.
